DIY Shelf & Stocking Holder Tutorial

You guys! Have you ever wanted to make something and thought it might be too hard, or you couldn’t do it? I’ve wanted to make a shelf for a while, and just haven’t tried. I didn’t think I’d be able to do it right and have turn out good enough to use. Well, guess what?! I made this shelf! I made it to use for our stockings, but it is something that I can leave up all year. I’m so excited about it. Today, I’m sharing this DIY Shelf & Stocking Holder Tutorial.

I knew just what I wanted to make when Rockwell Tools sent me this Versacut Mini-Circular Saw.

You’ll need a Versacut Mini-Circular Saw, a 1″ x 4″ x 8′ board, a drill/screw driver, screws, hooks, clamps, stain, and electric sander.

Using the Versacut Mini-Circular Saw (it can cut up to a 2″ x4″), you’ll cut two lengths of your board to be 3 1/2′ long each.

Once I had my boards cut, I used two clamps to hold them together the way I needed them.

I used a small drill bit and drilled four pilot holes along the top of the shelf. I didn’t measure these, I just eye balled how far apart they were.

Next, I inserted the screws.

Now the shelf is put together.

I stained the shelf a dark kona color (Rust-oleum).

Once it was dry, I sanded it for distressing.

I absolutely love the look of something distressed over stain.

Now it is time to measure for the hooks. Because this is 3 1/2′ wide, and I need six hooks, I measured 6″ from the edge, and then every 6″ all the way across the board.

I laid the hooks where they needed to be, and marked where to drill the pilot holes. I moved the hook while I drilled the holes for the screws.

Now you are ready to attach the hooks.

Once I had all the hooks attached, I was so giddy! I couldn’t believe I made this shelf, and even more so, I couldn’t believe how easy it was.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to hang it on the wall, but I ended up using Command Strips, and they are working perfectly!

I thought my Believe Letter Set went perfectly on the shelf with the stockings hanging below.

I can’t wait to decorate this fun shelf all through out the year, and hang different things on from the hooks!
