I have four boys. Boys are hard on pants! This morning when it was time for my boys to get ready for school, I realized that my 8 year old didn’t have any clean pants, except for those in my ever growing “to mend” pile. So I hurried and patched the knees, and thought I’d share with you how I did it. This is just how I do it, I’m not saying this is the only way it should be done, but it works!
You have your hole, and you need a scrap piece of jean material. Make sure your scrap of jean is plenty big enough.
Get your machine ready. I use the darning foot, it makes it easier to go where I need to go on the pants. I’ve done this with my standard foot before too, it just isn’t as easy to move the pants around. Reach up the pant leg and hold the scrap piece of jean in place and pin it.
Put your pants on your sewing machine, put your feed dog down and then put the presser foot down. You will have the bottom of the pant leg bunched up on the machine as shown below.
Start sewing. On this one I did trim the frayed part off before sewing, but I’ve done it where I’ve left it on as well. Just personal preference. I like to make sure I patch more than just the hole because I’ve had my boys wear a second hole in the knee right above where the patch is.
Once I get it all sewn, I turn the leg inside out and trim the excess jean.
Then I turn them right side out and put them in my kids drawers so they can wear them. {And I am relieve that I don’t have to buy another pairs of jeans, just cause there are holes in the knees. :)} I’ve tried a few different patterns, just to add variety, the circles is one of them I’ve done.
