I’ve been wanting to make myself a new purse for quite some time, but I just hadn’t gotten around to it. I wanted to do it with out a pattern, and I didn’t want to mess it up, waste any fabric and have to start over on it. When I found out that I made it into the third round of Creative Bloggers Got Talent, I decided that I would give it a try, and make a new purse for my project.
This is how it turned out. I couldn’t find the fabric that I was picturing, but when I found this cute orange and white canvas fabric at Hobby Lobby, I decided that it would work. I had a picture in my head of what kind of design I wanted for this purse, so I took a piece of paper and started drawing little pictures to get it out of my head.
Then I got a larger piece of paper and made me a little pattern for the bag portion, so that all the pieces would be the same. I figured out where I wanted all of my pockets to be, and just went for it. Yes, it was a little bit scary to start cutting into the fabric, and I was just hoping that it wouldn’t end up being all for nothing.
This is a close up of the front. I put this cute little pocket on the front using the gray polka dot fabric, which I think accents the orange fabric well.
I knew that I wanted a large pocket on the outside of the bag, so that if I had papers or something else that I needed a place for, I could put them there quickly.
I put three pockets on the inside, and I kind of wish that I would have put more pockets on the inside {there are only pockets on one side inside}, but I didn’t think I’d need that many. If I make another one, then I’ll know that I would use more pockets. 🙂 I am very happy with how the inside turned out though!
For the handle, I was going to just do an orange strap, but I decided that I’d use both fabrics to make it a little more fun. I do love how it turned out! This was also the very first time that I’ve done a zipper on any kind of sewing project…and I did it COMPLETELY wrong. lol! I did it how it made sense in my head, and it works, but I took the zipper handle part all the way off so I could sew how I needed too, and then I had to get the zipper lined up and the handle put back on. That took a little while, but I got it and my zipper works. One of these days I should probably learn the proper way to do a zipper. 🙂
This was the first time I’ve made a bag with out a pattern, so it was a bit of a challenge, but I’m SOO glad that I did it. I feel like I could make almost any kind of bag now. Although this bag isn’t perfect, and when I make another one I will do a few things differently, I really surprised myself that I could even do something that I was picturing in my head and have it turn out close to what I wanted when it was all done!
I did make it into round four of the Creative Bloggers Got Talent {barely, I was the last one!}, so now to figure out what I’m going to make for round four….wish me luck, I need it this week!
