I hadn’t really planned on doing back to school gifts for my kids teachers this year, I’ve never done them, it’s just not something I’ve ever really thought about. Well, back in July when I posted what I gave my kids teachers as a thank you gift for last year, it got me thinking that I could to the same thing for the beginning of the school year. Shortly after I posted that, I saw these fun pencils on The Wood Connection blog, and knew I wanted to make some for my kids teachers. These wouldn’t have to be for the beginning of the school year, but I thought it would be a fun time to do them. So I got a couple of them. Well, the first day of school came and went…and these pencils were not finished. They weren’t even started! But where we live they have back to school night during the first week of school, not before school starts, so I thought this would be a great time for my boys to give these to their teachers. So I hurried to get them done, and we gave them to the teachers that night. I thought it would be a good idea to have my boys carry/hold them on the way to the school, but they thought they would use them as swords instead. The pencils did survive, but had some minor scratches on them. 🙁 The teachers didn’t seem to notice though. 🙂
These were pretty basic to do. I just painted, inked the edges, put wire, and cut the vinyl.
I used my scalloped punch and punched some paper, then laid it on the wood and painted to make this scalloped edge. It didn’t even have to be perfect, cause what pencil is when it is sharpened. For the very tip, I just was careful when I painted with the sponge brush.
And the wire. I just wrapped it around a pen, then put it where I wanted it.
The teachers both seemed really excited about their pencils.
