Did you all have a good Memorial Day weekend? Memorial Day is always one that I look forward to. We always go to my hometown. My grandparents always have a huge breakfast that they cook for all the family and extended family. It’s like a family reunion, and we always enjoy it. This year was a little different tho, my grandpa passed away last summer, so this was the first one without him. It was still a good day tho. We always head to the cemetery to visit my dad’s grave, and this year we visited my grandpa too. I hope you all had a great day doing whatever you enjoy doing on Memorial Day!
This is a tutorial that I shared over at Mama Says Sew a few weeks back.
I want to teach you how I make my Cloth Diaper Burp Cloths. This is one of my go to gifts for baby showers or for anyone I know who is having a baby. I’ve always enjoyed making these cloth diapers be cute, but I’ve only ever made a couple of them for myself. Go figure! My sister has several tho! I think I may have given her some with each of her babies. 🙂
Here is the tutorial to make some of your own.
Supplies:
First off you need to get your cloth diapers. I have found them at Walmart and also at Target. I prefer the kind that Target carries because they are thicker. I don’t prewash my cloth diapers or flannel fabric, and I’ve never had a problem. I like doing this for a couple of reasons, the projects don’t look used when you gift them, and I can’t keep up with the laundry that I have, why would I want to make more for myself?! 🙂 My sister has washed the ones that I’ve given her and they still look great, even tho they weren’t prewashed.
Start out by measuring the center of the burp cloth, then add 1″ to each measurement for seam allowances. Cut your flannel to the measurement that you figured. Mine ended up being 21″ x 5″ but you need to measure yours to make sure they will fit right. Next, iron your fabric and then turn it over and fold the long edges in 1/2″ and iron, then fold the ends in 1/2″ and iron those. Now you are ready to put it on the cloth diaper. Set it on and pin it. You may need to adjust the ironed folds slightly to make them fit just right. Once you have them pinned you are ready to sew the flannel to the cloth diaper using a zig zag stitch. I start on one of the long edges, keep my needle down on the corners and just work my way around until I get back to the start. Because of the stretch in the fabric, sometimes I have to adjust it when I get to the end of the first side, and tuck my extra under. When I do this I always adjust both sides. If you don’t you’ll end up with puckers on the last corner that you sew.
They are very simple, and once you are done, you should have something that looks like this.
This is one of my favorite gifts to give for a baby shower or to someone that has just had a new baby. I love to tie it up with thick ric rac and give it to them just like that. I usually slip a card in the top of the ric rac.
One of my favorite things about this project is you can use scraps of flannel that you have or you can buy a variety of cute patterns to put on them. It doesn’t take much flannel at all.
So, are you ready to go grab some cloth diapers and make them into some cute burp cloths? They really are so easy! I made 20 of them in just a few hours, and had baby gifts done for 4 people!
