I’ve got four sons, no daughters, so as you could imagine, sometimes our house smells a bit sweaty. I’ve been dealing with this for the better part of 10 years. I have a couple of boys that like to get in the shower and stand in the nice warm water, but they don’t use soap or shampoo unless they are reminded. I decided it was time to try and do something about it. I created these Vinyl Instructions for the Shower and I’m hoping it will help my boys better with their cleanliness! We’ll see how it goes.

When I decided I wanted to do this, I had a few goals in mind. #1 was to make sure my boys were cleaning themselves, #2 was to make it look cute, and #3 was to match the bathroom. I think I got #2 and #3, we’ll see about #1. π
To make this project, you’ll need:
- Cricut Explore Machine with Mat
- Vinyl in the color of your choice
- Transfer Tape
Start by designing your vinyl decal. I wanted mine big enough that it could be read. More than half of us at our house wear glasses, but when we are showering, we don’t wear them, so I wanted this large enough that it could be read, even without the glasses.
Once I had the vinyl designed, I cut it out on my Cricut Explore.
Weed your vinyl. I love using my weeding toolΒ to do this.
Put transfer tape over the top of your vinyl.
Then apply it in the shower. Just make sure that the surface that you are applying it to, is nice and clean. Also, make sure to push the vinyl down everywhere. I pushed it into the tile seams really well. After I applied the vinyl, I did wish that I would have designed this so that I didn’t have anything on the tile seams, but we’ll see how well it lasts. So far, I’m loving it!
The real question will be, if my kids love it and actually do what it says! Ha! Am I the only one that has this stinky boy issue going on? Please tell me I’m not alone! π

You are not alone. My middle child wont give his hair that good of a washing. He says he doesn’t like the feel of his hair when it is “too” clean. I think he is just not getting all of the shampoo out. It is always a bit of an argument in our home when it comes to his hair. But trust me when the boys start to really notice girls they will be washing very well. My oldest practically transformed over night when he realized girls don’t have cooties.
That’s good to know. My oldest doesn’t even use shampoo unless I make him. If I want his hair washed, my husband or I have to wash it for him. Drives me CRAZY! I don’t want him to be noticing girls too soon tho, I’m not ready for that yet. π
Amy, this is a wonderful idea! I just showed it to my 10 yr old daughter who always “forgets” what she is supposed to do in the shower. I told her I was going to make this and she said she is excited so she will remember to rinse the shampoo out. What?!? How does she forget to do that??
A question about the vinyl. Do you only use the Cricut vinyl? Or are there other ones you use? I only have Cricut brand white vinyl that I keep meaning to use for window decals. I was wondering where you got that amazing blue!
Isn’t it funny the things that kids can forget? A friend commented on FB and said that she was going to add condition hair and wash face to hers. It’s such a fun, simple project, but it can be customized to whatever it needs to be. π
The Cricut Brand vinyl should work just fine, and I know they have lots of different colors. I use Oracal 631 vinyl for mine. I like to order my vinyl through Expressions Vinyl. They have a HUGE selection of colors, and they are reasonably priced. Here is a link if you are interested in seeing what they have. http://shrsl.com/?~8udu
That is really cute!! I am glad to know I am not the only one who has that issue. My children are the worst about standing in the shower, playing with the bar of soap but never washing their hair or body unless I tell them to call me in there so I can see them soaped up.
My son’s executive functioning coach was just telling me to laminate the steps to a shower and put it up in the shower, this is way more genius!!! Love it!
How is the vinyl holding up in the shower so far? I am thinking of doing some kind of a border around the top of our shower stall where the caulking is not too pretty. Not sure if that would work or not.
I had it at the end of the bath/shower where water rarely touched it. It has held up great! I don’t know how it would hold up somewhere that has a lot of moisture going over it all the time. We recently moved, and I plan to put it up in our new home as well, but where water doesn’t get on it very easily.
How long dis this last?
It depends on the type of material you’re putting it on. This is porcelain tile in these photos and it seemed to last well, but we did move from that home. I put some up in our new home, on a fiberglass surround and it is holding up ok. There are a few parts that are peeling. I’m sure if I would have aired out the bathroom better before applying, as well as using permanent vinyl, it would have stuck a little better.
Hey, it would be nice to know the type of vinyl you are using? I’m thinking of doing something similar but don’t know if I should use permanent or removable.

Hey mama! Question please. How did the vinyl workout in the shower wall? I live in an apartment and would like to put up a decal but fearful it would not come off. Would not want to have to pay to replace the stall. Thank you so much! Pat
