Self Binding Minky & Satin Baby Blanket

When I have a sister or close friend expecting a baby, one of my very favorite gifts to give them is one of these Self Binding Baby Blankets.  I use Minky and Flannel Backed Satin to make them and everyone loves them!  Recently when my sister in law was expecting, I took her shopping with me to pick out her own minky, then asked her what color she wanted on the back.  This is what she chose.

I think this polka dot minky is so fun! A few years ago I did a similar one that was the same pattern on the minky but it was black, hot pink, light pink and lime green.  I used hot pink on the back. It turned out fabulous as well.
I love making these for babies because the minky is SO soft!

Another thing that I love about these blankets is that they are big!  Because the satin and minky are sold at 58-60 inches wide, the blanket turns out to be about 54 inches square, so it can be used much longer than normal baby blankets.

Update: I now have the tutorial for this blanket! Click here to find it. If you are looking for for more baby gift ideas, check out my tutorial on how to make Cloth Diaper Burp Cloths and the Perfect Diaper Cake.  They both make great gifts!

Flannel-backed satin. Genius! I used a silky satiny material a while back and it shifted so much I swore off sewing with satiny stuff ever again.

I’ve heard that regular satin is really hard to sew with, but I’ve never used it. I only found the flannel backed satin by chance, and it’s the only kind I’ve ever used. 🙂

This is the cutest blanket ever! I love it. By chance do you have a tutorial I could get. I would love to try it out. Plus, I have never worked with anything satin-y, so that might be a new experience for me. Thank you so much for the cute cute post!

I don’t have a tutorial up for it yet. I’m hoping sometime in the next few weeks that I will.

I love your blankets. I have been making minky/flannel backed satin blankets for a while now and I have a way I do the corners, but it’s not easy and takes lots of TLC. Your corners are perfect. Any chance you have made a tutorial on the subject? I’ve seen other tutorials for self-binding blankets, but I want the minky to extend all the way from end to end because of how thin the satin is by itself. It looks like yours does that.
